Axles & Differential – SHELDON AXLE COMPANY

We believe that both our front and rear axles were made by the SHELDON AXLE COMPANY of Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania.  Their own advertising from the period indicates that this company was a big deal. They claimed that it was the largest spring & axle company in the world.  Our visits to Wilkes-Barre, lead Janet & I to believe that if this was the case, their home town doesn’t even know they ever existed. We visited two libraries and the Historical Society there and nobody seemed to know anything about this company. It was purported to have more than 1200 employees. Poof………gone & forgotten in 100 years. That’s a pity.

Sheldon Axle Plant, approximately 1912. The company changed its name to Sheldon Axle & Spring in Nov. 1914.

Our front axle, marked SHELDON Axle Co. with double anchor trademark.

This ad from Motor Age, February 1, 1912 shows our rear axle & differential

Our rear axle differential housing marked with “D 1”, not “201-D”

Differential housing – casting date: Feb 16, 1911 D1

Regardless of the mark on the casting, we are certain that the differential is the SHELDON model 201-D.  All the features cited in the advertisement (above) are consistent with our rear axle.
